Has Disney Finally Cracked the Live-Action Formula? Aladdin Gives Us a Taste of What We’ve Been Missing

By Jen P

Guuuuurl, let me tell you, I have hated me some Disney remakes this past couple of years. Cinderella was boring and forgettable. And Disney gave us what they thought we wanted with Beauty and the Beast, yet missed the mark (See my review of BATB here). But there’ve been a few diamonds in the rough. Most notably, Maleficent, with its spin on the Sleeping Beauty fairytale. I LOOOOOVE the mother-daughter connection in that film. I’ve also heard the Dumbo movie was alright; though, you’ll have to tell me, because I’m not brave enough to find out. (I cry ugly tears for that baby elephant.)

But then came Aladdin. And, y’all.

This movie finally comes close to the quality of remake we DESERVE! Continue reading

Movie Review: JEM

By Jen P

jem 5

I, like most discerning movie watchers, skipped Jem when it came out last year. Another 80’s-cartoon-turned-modern-day-film just didn’t fit in my theater budget. Especially when there were no superheros or truly outrageous special effects to be seen in the trailer (See what I did there?). But on a random Thursday night, when I had a little free time and an extra 2$ to spare, I stopped at a Redbox and picked up last year’s box office failure. Something made me choose it over the critically acclaimed The Martian; fan favorite, The Mockingjay; or sillier fare, such as The Night Before and Daddy’s Home. And I missed ALL of those in the theater. So imagine my surprise, when Jem turned out to be an entertaining treat for the whole family. Sure, plot holes abound, and some of the acting was sub-par, but the music was on point, and I ended up ignoring all the flaws because of the sheer joy and good message the film delivered.  Continue reading

Do we need more remakes and prequels??

By: Dani

Everyone knows that I have mixed feelings on doing reboots of TV shows that were hits because I think it is very rare that a reboot does justice to the original. And we have a ton of reboots that are possibly in the works for some of our favorite childhood shows. Check out this article I did to learn about a few. Well, now it turns out that we have just as many (if not more) reboots of movies to look forward to in the next few years. And not only do we have reboots coming, but now film companies are pouncing on to the idea of doing prequels…for, like, EVERYTHING!!! Continue reading

In 1991, Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, though an unlikely pairing, came together and made movie magic in Point Break. The film, about a young law enforcement agent who goes undercover to infiltrate a group of bank robbing surfers, didn’t dominate box offices, yet managed to create and maintain a loyal following of fans. Talk to anyone in middle or high school during those years and you’ll hear something akin to, “Man, I love that movie!”  Continue reading
