It’s Christmas! A day filled with gifts, loved ones, and Doctor Who. Except this year they’ve decided to not do a Doctor Who Christmas special. I know, I know, it’s quite the bummer. But my geeky friends, it’s still a joyous day that should be spent focused on what we’re grateful for in this season. So instead of crying into our scarves about the lack of a Doctor Who Christmas special this year, let’s look back on all the other Christmas specials and focus on all the wonderful reasons to love these uniquely Christmas specials*.
It’s the season of gratitude! Unlike many, I don’t actually love Thanksgiving. It’s basically just the holiday that stands in the way of it being socially acceptable for me to fully embrace my Christmas enthusiasm at midnight on November 1. However, I do appreciate that many people try to stop and take a moment to be grateful for the good things in their lives. Within the Doctor Who universe, there are many things to make us geek out and get pumped up. I could do an entire list on all the great things about Doctor Who. Today, though, I’d like to talk about just one of the terrific elements of the series. That one thing is the absolute awesomeness of getting a brand new Doctor!
It just so happens that we are currently experiencing this exact phenomenon. We have less than 3 weeks until Season 11 of Doctor Who premiers worldwide with the first adventure of the 13th Doctor, Jodie Whittaker. The anticipation is high and fans all over the world are figuratively holding their breath as we wait to see exactly who this new Doctor will be and how her personality will differ from every Doctor who came before.
Already, there is controversy stirring as the Doctor has switched gender for the first time in the 55-year history of the series. However, the switch is not unprecedented in the show’s lore. And even aside from that massive change, there are all the questions, mysteries, and unknowns that come with any new Doctor, be she female or male.

For Whovians (Doctor Who fans), it’s an exciting time. We are less than three weeks away from getting a new Doctor. Anticipation and tension are high. Many of us are equal parts excited, nervous, curious, and anxious to see what this new Doctor will be like and what kind of adventures we can expect from her and her new Companions. A bit of surprising news came down the pike on Friday as the BBC announced that Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat would be stepping down and Chris Chibnall would be replacing him after series ten in 2017. In addition, Doctor Who will have only the Christmas special in 2016; Moffat’s final season will not air until the first part of 2017. Chibnall will take over the show’s helm for series eleven in 2018. Continue reading →
