Many of my friends enjoy watching films and television shows that engage the fear center of their brains. They enjoy being scared, creeped out, and terrified by the the images and suggestions on the screen. From It and Halloween to American Horror Story and The Haunting of Hill House, these folks enjoy the adrenaline rush that fear brings. They actually get irritated if the film or TV show doesn’t scare them as sufficiently as they hoped it would when it began. For the record, I am not one of those wacky, fear-chasing people. During the Summer of 2008, my husband and I, along with our friends, had a strict schedule. Each week in May, June, and July, there was a new film release for us to see. We were all young and childless with what now feels like endless expendable income and boundless hours of unencumbered time. I made a chart and each Friday night, we met up for dinner and a show. It was a glorious summer. And it all began on May 2, 2008 with an iffy little venture starring an alcoholic star looking to make a comeback. Continue reading →
On the heels of Galentine’s Day, I thought it would be a great time to highlight a book that takes female friendship and does some very mysterious and magical things with it. The Peach Keeper, by Sarah Addison Allen, is part mystery, part magical fantasy, and part buddy cop adventure. It’s a wonderfully strange tale of two women thrust together into a reluctant friendship in an attempt to uncover a decades-old mystery, protect their families, save their investments, and possibly, discover what true friendship really is.
Tomorrow is Galentine’s Day, the unofficial day designated each year to celebrate the bonds of female friendship. I hope you and your besties have made appropriate plans. Whether you have or not, though, I’ve got a list of excellent movie choices to help you celebrate this most friend-tastic of holidays. So sit back, relax, pour yourself a tall glass of the beverage of your choice, and enjoy these movies that celebrate the magic of being a woman and the incredible pleasure of getting to take the journey with your best friends at your side!
The holidays season is over, a new year has begun, and it’s time for life to find it’s natural rhythm once again. During the season, I found myself with an excess of vacation days and a scarcity of episodes from my favorite TV series. What’s a girl to do? Why, try new and interesting shows, of course! I dove into three different series to see what treasures I could discover. Here’s my haul:
Today we celebrate the most epic among us, Jen P. You are one of a kind, Sister. You inspire, encourage, and uplift. We’re grateful to have you as our team leader and one of our best friends. Have a spectacular day!
The season of giving is officially here. We’ve enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner and now we can fully embrace the holiday season in all its glory.
While we enjoy the twinkling lights, the delicious food, and all the sappy movies that Hallmark Channel and Netflix can throw at us, let’s also remember those who are less fortunate. Because this season of giving is a wonderful time to give to those in need. While we shop, eat, and celebrate, let’s please keep in mind our friends in California who are currently losing their homes and lives to deadly fires, the homeless and impoverished in our own areas, and all those around the world who are not able to celebrate.
This season, as you give to family and friends, please consider giving to others as well. ‘Tis the Season.
