This summer, we spent each month on a trio of monsters. Each of us covered a specific beastie and highlighted why they were better than the rest. Of course, we all have our personal favorites. Which specific monster reigned in each category?
The term “alien” is usually associated with something extraterrestrial, or not of this planet. You may picture intelligent different beings that long only to communicate with us and share information. Or perhaps you envision a warlike species that thirsts for the domination of the human race. They might be our saviors or the unlocking to our ultimate demise. Will you take a journey with me, my fellow geeks, a journey that allows you to suspend your disbelief and exposes you to a world…a world full of aliens? Continue reading →
Sometimes they’re cute, sometimes they’re sexy, and sometimes, they’re flat-out scary. From the broody fallen angel to the thing that goes bump in the night, demons populate our entertainment and our nightmares. They are the basis of evil, morphing into the myths of vampires, werewolves, and many other monsters throughout history. They’re blamed for the downfall of man and they’re the cause of all horrors in the world. Yet, if you believe in the Christian theology of demons, they were created from the purest of all creatures when God’s favorite angel, Lucifer, fell, thus becoming what some would call the first and worst demon of all.
Read on to experience a tour of the demonic in modern pop culture, from the friendly to the… well, to the demonic. Whether you like them good or bad, they make for hella good entertainment. Continue reading →
Have you ever considered how many different cultures create the foundation of modern America? It’s a lot. Consider it for a moment and really think through it. There’s Native American, British, Spanish, French, African, Chinese, and too many others to list here. Now consider this… every single one of these cultures has some form of legend or belief in witches and witchcraft. Even when they’re not called witches exactly, there is someone in the history of nearly every culture who could be put in that classification. It’s such an interesting thing to think about- all these different beliefs, customs, languages, and practices that meld together to make our unique culture. But they all have witches in common. Is it any wonder that witches play such a prominent role in our entertainment, from literature to plays to television to movies? No matter the medium, witches are iconic and legendary.
I love witches and greatly adore them as part of my entertainment. I enjoy witch stories. I gobble them up. Almost all witches get my love: spell-casting witches, potion-making witches, good witches, bad witches, natural witches, practicing witches, whatever. And in case you were wondering, I absolutely count wizards, warlocks, sorcerers, and mages in this category. Fortunately for me, there is lots of entertainment that features these folks and lets me enjoy them in all their magical glory. I’ve even found that if you pay special attention, there are some pretty fascinating things you can learn from witches and their stories. Allow me to break it down.
Here are ten things that makes witches so amazing and what they’re able to teach us about ourselves: Continue reading →
What is it about unicorns that draws the human eye to them? Is it their proximity to the real life existing creatures called horses? Or is it that mystical part of them? The one horn that in some form or another always contains some kind of special power? What makes unicorns so different from any other magical creature?
Maybe you want to use them to add some shine to the bedroom, because you’re looking to stand out at a New Year’s Eve party, or maybe it’s just the perfect final touch to a costume to you’re wearing to a special Comic Con, but at any rate, these totally Geek Chic Unicorn Glitter Lashes from the fabulous Etsy shop Sparkle Pig Glitter will definitely become a great addition to your “makeup wardrobe.”
The lashes are handmade and ship from The United Kingdom. The lashes have a five star rating (can’t beat that) and are a low price of just $9.16. Still not convinced? The Etsy shop owner obviously strives for customer satisfaction because she also posts some Frequently Asked Questions to her site. Pretty cool huh? No doubt that us glam girls at Sister Geeks are excited to try these bad boys out! 😉
I don’t watch HBO’s Game of Thrones. Yes, I know it’s “really great” and “epic” and “one of the best shows to ever grace television screens” or whatever. But the series also features a particular brand of ultra-violence to which I prefer not to expose myself. So I don’t watch the show. I do, however, binge-watch clips on YouTube of scenes that feature the character, Daenerys Targaryen. Why?! Because she’s the frakking Mother of Dragons! That’s why! And because dragons are AMAZING!
This will show my age, but the first Disney princess I remember is Ariel. I competed with my friends for the best mermaid hair in the pool, yearned for my own shimmering green tail, and sang Part of Your World so many times, my mom banned it from the house. And with her bright red hair and rebellious streak, she’s a female role model who stands the test of time.
Whether they’re falling in love with a handsome prince or singing to lure sailors to a watery grave, I’m fascinated by mermaids in media. But what is it about these saucy sirens that appeals to us land-locked mortals? Continue reading →
They look scary, they make scary sounds, and they will never stop trying to get what they want…human flesh. They are…zombies. Your favorite may be the slow moving, the fast running, or the intelligent and loving zombie capable of change, but regardless, all these creatures want to do is embrace you-and not in a fun “oh this person loves me so much” way. More like in a “oh God, why didn’t I wear a protective helmet?” way. Why do we fear zombies? Why do we love zombies? Geeks, let me take you through a blood splattered walk down memory lane, and we’ll figure it out together. Continue reading →
