Netflix’s French rom-com, THE HOOKUP PLAN, will warm your soul this winter

By Jen P

Netflix has its fair share of foreign-language misses; most of which, I rage-quit within the first ten minutes. There’s bad dubbing, too-rapid subtitles, cheesiness, and poor production value, with varying combinations of those four main offenses. In fact, finding good films/shows on Netflix that I haven’t seen before has become a bit of a unicorn hunt these days. Foreign language or not. So when I do stumble upon that odd show that sparks new joy, I have to share it with you geeks. The Hookup Plan, or Plan Coeur, in French, is one such unicorn. Continue reading

Netflix Wins 2018’s Cheesy Christmas Movies with The Princess Switch

By Jen P

Why do I love The Princess Switch? Because love stories, however ridiculous, warm my heart. I’m a shallow, shallow woman, and as long as the acting is decent and I’m personally attracted to the cast, I’m all in. But what truly makes The Princess Switch stand out among the other candy cane and hot cocoa romances, is that in this tale, you get two love stories for the price of one! Continue reading

Geek Chic: There Be Dragons

By Jen P

For about $350, you can be the proud owner of this stunning corset (find it here). Head over to Etsy shop MirirArtSteampunk to find this lovely piece and more. The artist creates unique steampunk items, as low as $23 (the corset is the priciest item in the shop). All items are handmade in Italy, so Christmas delivery is highly doubtful this year, but reviewers suggest her items are worth the wait.

Happy shopping, Geeks!

Geek News: Comic Book Juggernaut, Stan Lee Passes at 95

By Jen P

The geek world mourns today, as we say goodbye to a legend, Mr. Stan Lee. Born Stanley Martin Lieber, he used the name Stan Lee on his first comics, so that he could write “real” stories under his given name later in life. Turned out, he had such a unique take on his superheroes at the time– making them flawed and diverse– that he became the biggest name in the industry. He is best known for creating iconic Marvel characters like Spiderman and the X-Men, and for his cameo appearances in all of the modern films (currently as the Watcher in the Avengers series).

In July of 2017, Stan lost his wife of 70 years to complications with a stroke. He is survived by his daughter Joan, who is named after her.

September 2017, I had the great pleasure of meeting Stan at Dragon Con. I remember feeling super intimidated that I was about to meet a legend, and the moment he spoke in that familiar voice, I knew I was doing something incredibly rare and special. But despite my fears, he was such a nice guy and one of the kindest celebrities I’ve met to date.

Stan, you will be deeply missed by myself and the rest of the geek community.
