Today is the day! Zombieland 2: Double Tap comes out in theaters. I will definitely be going to see it this weekend and I can’t wait. I have waited literally 10 years for this sequel and I am beyond excited. To celebrate, I wanted to talk about other zombie movies and books I absolutely adore. Let’s get started!
1. Dread Nation by Justina Ireland
I’ve talked about this book before in another article, but this book is so good I could talk about it for a million articles. This book takes place shortly after the civil war. This story follows Jane as she attends a combat school to learn how to be a lady and kill shamblers. Jane desperately wants to get back home to her mom, but people start disappearing from town and Jane must get to the source of it while protecting her friends and to finally go home. The narrative voice of this book is so incredible. You are immediately sucked into Jane’s world and her story. She’s strong, funny, and a badass through and through. You’ll laugh and cheer and maybe cry throughout Jane’s journey. This is one of the best zombie books I’ve ever read and it’s also just one of the best books in general that I have ever read. It’s got all I could ever want in a book, a strong female character, diversity, historical fiction, humor, and badassery. Definitely check it out! Also, a sequel is coming out early next year, so read this and get hyped up for the sequel with me!
2. Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion
This book has expanded to a series, which is great, but I particularly love the first book. In Warm Bodies, R, is a zombie who spends his days shuffling around an abandoned airport until he meets Julie and his heart does a weird thing, it beats again, for one tiny second. Warm Bodies is all about how R’s love for Julie is slowly helping him turn back into a human who doesn’t want to eat people. The writer has some incredibly powerful and eloquent one liners in the book that still bump around in my head today even though I read this book almost 7 years ago. This book was also turned into a movie, the movie is alright, the book is always better, in my humble opinion.
3. Shaun of the Dead
Shaun of the Dead was probably one of the first zombie movies I ever watched. And it’s a winner. The movie follows Shaun and his friend in the middle of the Zombie apocalypse. The two friends race through town to gather their friends and family to keep them safe. Of course, along the way, many, many shenanigans occur. Whenever Simon Pegg (Shaun) and Nick Frost (Shaun’s friend, Ed) get together in a movie, I know I’m about to laugh my butt off.
What kind of list would this be if I didn’t mention Zombieland? My second zombie movie love. I saw this movie in theaters and immediately fell in love with it. This movie is about a rag tag group of friends just trying to survive hoards of zombies. There’s Tallahassee, a country boy who has creative and fun ways of killing zombies, there’s Columbus, the careful guy with a mile long list of rules on how to survive zombie attacks, there’s Wichita, a strong lady who can hold her own with a rifle, and Little Rock, the youngest of the bunch, but make no mistake, she’s clever and fast. These four find themselves in funny and terrifying situations. I can’t wait to see where they are now in the sequel!
That’s my list of my favorite books and movies about zombies! What are your favorites? Are you going to see Zombieland: Double Tap? Let me know in the comments below!
