Sarah Michelle Gellar is back!! SMG just announced via Instagram that she is reprising her role as Kathryn Merteuil for the upcoming Cruel Intentions TV show on NBC. The 1999 film starred Gellar along with Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon but no word yet on whether anyone else from the film will be making an appearance in the small-screen adaptation. But, seriously, just the fact that they got Gellar is a huge deal.

Together again at last: She was joined in the photos by director Roger Kumble and producer Neal MoritzGellar captioned the picture:

#throwbackthursday (a bit early in Los Angeles) this picture was taken on the eve of production on the original #cruelintentions. Its me #rogerkumble (director) and #nealmoritz (exec producer) and the other is a picture of us now on the eve of production on the new #cruelintentions. That’s right “everybody loves me, and I intend to keep it that way” #kathrynmerteuil is back!!! I am happy to say that I will be joining them (and @nbctv ) on the new #Crueltv

The Cruel Intentions movie followed the drama of step-siblings Merteuil and Sebastian Valmont (Phillippe) as they tried to seduce Annette Hargrove (Witherspoon). It ended with the death of Valmont and the humiliation of Merteuil as she was exposed to be addicted to cocaine and a contributor to the death of her brother.  The show will pick up about 16 years later in real time and will follow Kathryn Merteuil as she is the wife of a very wealthy man and works to lead a youth rehabilitation movement. However, when Valmont and Hargrove’s son, Bash Casey, shows up to learn more about the life of his father, it throws Merteuil into a tailspin and she picks up old habits of trying to corrupt the innocent.

A really big positive of this reboot show is that the writer/director (Roger Kumble) and executive producer (Neal Moritz) from the film will be resuming their roles for the show. Authenticity is crucial for reboots and it is really important to have at least a few of the same people involved. Y’all know how I feel about reboots!

But, honestly, I am so excited to see SMG back on television! I have missed my favorite slayer! The short-lived shows The Crazy Ones and Ringer just were not what we have all been waiting to see. And if I can’t have her back as Buffy, might as well get her back as the most manipulative bitch the ’90s ever knew!

No announcement yet on when we can expect to see Cruel Intentions premiere.

How do you feel about Gellar coming back to the world of Cruel Intentions? Does it affect your decision to watch the show? Will you be watching?

  1. I’m very excited about it, although I’m curious to see how far they’ll go, after all the movies are pretty steamy. Still I’m looking forward to seeing what has happened to “Kathryn” so many years later

    • You’re right. Since it is on NBC, they may not be able to get away with as much. Can you imagine if it was on HBO or Showtime? It would definitely be steamy then!

      • True dat. I’m guessing maybe it’s meant to target a teen demographic and that’s why NBC picked it up as opposed to one of the racier networks. Although I would be very happy to be proven wrong.
