The Gilmore Girls news is coming fast and furious as we gear up for the return of the classic mother-daughter show on Netflix. In addition to learning the names of each episode, this past week brought news of more cast members signing on for this reunion as well as the start of filming(!) and some intrigue about a certain cast member’s return to Stars Hollow.
Scripts have been distributed and table reads have begun as has filming for the four new episodes, titled after the four seasons of the year. Yanic Truesdale (Michel Girard) posted a photo of himself and Lauren Graham (Lorelai Gilmore) on set at the Dragonfly Inn this week.
Photos of sets have cropped up here and there as have a lovely little image from Scott Patterson (Luke) of his familiar flannel shirts, this time adorned with a Luke’s Diner logo.
Filming started this Tuesday after the backlot of Warner Brothers was converted from the set of Grease Live back to Gilmore Girls. The filming for all four ninety-minute episodes is set to run through June 30th so no doubt we will be regaled with all sorts of news and photos as our favorite Stars Hollow residents return to their former digs.
New Cast Members Abound
In addition to the returning cast, this revival, tentatively titled Gilmore Girls: Seasons, will include a number of new characters:
- Berta and Alejandro, a Peruvian couple. Alejandro is both a handyman and a solid family man.
- Nat Compton, an incredibly miserable looking man who never smiles.
- 13-year-old Dewey
- Clementina, a Portuguese nanny
- 7-year-old Tim and his 5-year-old sister Gabriela
- 9-year-old Korean-American twins Stevie & Kwan
- A whole bunch of hippies at a commune?
- a pleasant 30-something Paul, a Michael Cera-esque guy who is “a good boyfriend”
- an older high-end men’s magazine editor Jim
- a blue-collar guy named Dwayne
- good-looking, eager 20-something Damon
With Keiko Agena returning, it’s not surprising to see a casting call for the twins Steve and Kwan, but with no Mrs. Kim (Emily Kuroda) or Zach (Todd Lowe) announced yet, the question of what Lane’s little family will look like in the revival is still up in the air.
The inclusion of Paul and the magazine editor Jim implies that Rory is still single, as AS-P has confirmed, but that she is dating much like any 30-something. It also gives us a hint as to where Rory might be in her career.
Two other intriguing new characters include seven-year-old Tim and his five-year-old sister Gabriela. Could these be Luke and Lorelai’s kids? Nine years have elapsed since we saw the couple last. I’m leaning more toward these cherubs belonging to someone else (Lulu and Kirk?), but we shall see!
Sookie’s Return a No-Go?
In addition to the core four characters, the Gilmore Girls three and Luke, news of other returning cast members comes in by the day. We knew that townies like Sean Gunn (Kirk), Rose Abdoo (Gypsy), Liz Torres (Miss Patty), Yanic Truesdale (Michel), and Lane (Keiko Agena) are part of the new episodes. Other fan favorites like Liza Weil (Paris), Matt Czuchry (Logan), and Tanc Sade (Logan’s friend Finn) have confirmed their return to Gilmore Girls as well. As more of the cast announce their intentions to come back to Stars Hollow for these new episodes, you will hear about it here on Sister Geeks.
As actors confirm their returns left and right, one name has come up over and over with no news until this past week. Melissa McCarthy, who played Lorelai’s best friend Sookie, has a busy career of her own now, with a number of movies either coming out or set to be filmed in 2016. Her show Mike and Molly will exit CBS’s lineup this year as well. Amy Sherman-Palladino, writer and show-runner, had expressed a desire to include McCarthy if the actress had time, but Sookie herself took to Twitter this week to let fans know that she hadn’t been asked to return.
Yikes! What’s going on in Stars Hollow? Let’s hope that this confusion clears up soon so that we can have some Sookie in our new episodes!
No Premiere Date Set Yet
Now that we know that filming is underway, when we will see these on Netflix? A date for these new episodes is not yet known, but stay tuned for that announcement to come soon – I hope! A recent Instagram image does seem to hint that we will see this revival air in 2016, but still no exact date for the premiere has come down from anyone at either Netflix or Warner Brothers.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have these by Christmas? The first episode will be Winter and the last will be Fall, following the characters over a whole year as they deal with the aftermath of the passing of Richard Gilmore and answering those questions we’ve all had since the show ended in 2007. Stay tuned here at Sister Geeks for more Gilmore Girls news as filming continues and more cast members are added!
