And The Nominees Are…

awards season

It’s awards season, geeks. The Golden Globes were this past weekend and the Oscar nominations were announced this week. But who cares?! Because the most important awards of the season are not a little gold man or a flashy gold globe, but a tiny golden raspberry. That’s right, folks. I’m talking about the Razzie Awards! The nominees were announced this week and I can’t wait to see who will come out on “top.”

Every year, the Golden Raspberry Awards (or Razzies) call out Hollywood’s elite and issues them a challenge to “own your bad.” This prize is meant to recognize the worst of the year’s movies and performances. With an “academy” made up of professional film critics as well as everyday movie-goers, the Razzies often feel like the only award (besides perhaps the People’s Choice) actually connected to the general populace and our opinions.

The Razzies are also arguably the most fun awards of the season. They aren’t meant to be malicious. Instead, their goal is to showcase missteps in the film industry, which is a gaping hole that other awards–by nature of their focus on what is best–completely ignore. The awards ceremony takes place every year the night before the Oscars. While the ceremony is not televised, winners are announced at 8:00pm PST the Saturday night before Oscar Sunday. This year, that date is February 27.

While, understandably, most Razzie nominees do not acknowledge the “honor” of their nomination, others take it in stride or even embrace it. Both Halle Berry and Sandra Bullock made sure to be on hand to personally accept their awards in 2005 and 2010, respectively. Berry won for the widely panned Catwoman and Bullock received her statue for the unfunny and irritating All About Steve. Interestingly enough, Bullock went on to win an Oscar for The Blind Side less than 24 hours after her Razzie win. Both ladies are among a select group of actors who have won both a Razzie and an Oscar. That could be part of why they didn’t let the dishonorable award get them down.

This year, several horrible movies dominate the nomination list. Fifty Shades of GreyJupiter AscendingPixels, and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 all top the list with six nominations each, including Worst Picture. This number is even more impressive when you realize that their are only 10 nomination categories. There is one more film that joins these four as a contender for the title of worst film of the year. Can you guess what it is?  Hint…

The Razzies do leave room for redemption, however. The tenth and final category on the nominations list is the Razzie Redeemer Award. This award was introduced in 2013 and actually highlights former Razzie nominees or winners who have redeemed themselves with outstanding contributions to the industry during the current year.
