And no, I don’t mean the Disney version. Universal has begun production on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale with the downer ending we’ve all heard about, but few of us have seen. Little is known about the film, other than Sofia Coppola was attached. She has since backed out due to “creative differences” with the production company. (Go here to see a parody of what that would have been like). And now we know that Moretz has been attached to play Ariel. You may remember her as the vampire from Let Me In, Carolyn Stoddard in Dark Shadows (with Johnny Depp), or the foul mouthed little superhero in Kickass. Personally, I adore her, so I hope she can redeem this disturbing fairy tale enough that I’ll go see it. Unfortunately, my mom thought she was getting a deal when she bought the Hans Christian Andersen anime adaptation of The Little Mermaid on VHS in the 90’s, so I’ve been scarred from an early age. Whoever made that movie, shame on you!
What do you think? Will you go see this film when it comes out? Think Moretz is right for the job? Let us know in the comments!
