Let’s talk about the totally ridiculous, completely non-canonical and totally adorable new web show, DC Superhero Girls. The show, which mostly exists to launch a toy line coming in Spring in 2016, stars many of DC’s well-known superheroes and villains, though the line between the two seems to be blurred to non-existent in this animated world. Everyone, it seems, is in training to be a superhero, which is both radical and cool.
On the show, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Katana and Bumblebee take center stage. They have all been transformed into teenagers who attend Super Hero High School. Catwoman, Hawkgirl and others join them there. The school is co-ed and the show does include Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) and Beast Boy, though the guys are relegated to secondary characters (for a change). The animation is modern and fun, made to appeal to young girls. I, for one, am SUPER-excited about that.
I love superheroes and I have an overwhelming desire for young ladies to be able to look at superheroes and relate to what they see. I believe they should be able to find themselves in the world of empowered characters fighting injustice. So I’m pumped over this show, which is directly geared at girls. A part of me wants to hem and haw over the fact that it’s only on the web and doesn’t have a place on larger screens, but I’m choosing to appreciate this step in the right direction and take this show as a win.
There is a bit of fear that the characters could be vapid and not do justice to the complexity of their adult inspirations, but the fear is minimal and I think it’s unfounded. DC hasn’t done movies well (so far), but they are great with television and animated films. Since this show is a blend of those mediums, I’m confident that it will be excellent.
