In 1991, Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, though an unlikely pairing, came together and made movie magic in Point Break. The film, about a young law enforcement agent who goes undercover to infiltrate a group of bank robbing surfers, didn’t dominate box offices, yet managed to create and maintain a loyal following of fans. Talk to anyone in middle or high school during those years and you’ll hear something akin to, “Man, I love that movie!”
The mid twenty-teens are quickly becoming the age of remakes. Television and movies are rarely original ideas anymore. Mostly, they are some form of rehashing, reshaping, re-imagining or regurgitating things old and beloved. Well, here’s another one for you. Point Break has been redone. This time there are new pretty faces and 21st century updates on what constitutes “extreme” in sports.
The preview looks like a bit of a wild ride, though I suspect it may be missing a lot of what made the original so special. It wasn’t the extremeness of the characters’ sport that made the movie great. It was the characters themselves, their depth and the dynamic aspects of their personalities that had them making tough choices and taking actions that were not always wise and often self-destructive, but right for them none-the-less.
Where you a fan of the original Point Break? Are you excited about the remake? Do you think it will do justice to the original? Check out the preview for the new movie below and tell us what you think in the comments.
